Welcome for New Finance and Administration Employees

If you are new to the portfolio, welcome! We are thrilled that you are here.

We'd like to help you understand more about the broad range of work that goes on in our portfolio, whether it be related to budget and finance, campus planning, facilities management, human resources, safety and risk, or administrative services. So, starting in fall 2019, Finance and Administration is piloting quarterly welcome sessions for employees who joined the portfolio within the previous few months. This pilot welcome initiative emerged as a result of:

  • a commitment to improving onboarding and networking in the portfolio, outlined in the Finance and Administration Diversity Action Plan
  • recommendations by the Finance and Administration diversity committee onboarding sub-committee
  • input from staff who attended the 2018-2019 informal networking sessions conducted by Jamie Moffitt, then-vice president for Finance and Administration (VPFA)

Once a quarter, employees who, within the previous few months, have joined one of the 25+ departments in our portfolio will be invited to an hour-long orientation and networking session hosted by the portfolio's leadership. Attendance at the session is voluntary, but strongly encouraged as it is an opportunity to learn more about the portfolio, the work we do to support the university mission, and our vice president's strategic priorities related to customer service and employee retention and development. It is also a great way to connect with other colleagues who are new to Finance and Administration and, in some cases, the university.

**These welcome sessions were paused during Covid-19 and we are working on ways to safely re-start the initiative.**

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What kind of content should I expect in the welcome session?

Following light refreshments, you will be welcomed by the Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration or an Associate Vice President. You will learn about the structure of the Finance and Administration portfolio, the varied work that our +/-600 employees engage in, and you will take a facility tour (e.g., of the power station or UO Police Department). The welcome session is designed to be informal, fun, and informative.

  • I have another appointment during the welcome session. May I decline and attend a future F&A welcome session?

If you are unable to change your other appointment, we can add you to the list for a future welcome session. You will have to wait another three months or so, at which point the information may be less relevant for you.

  • I was hired before these Finance and Admin welcome sessions started. May I join one of the welcome sessions?

During the 2019-2020 academic year, we are piloting the Finance and Administration-specific welcome sessions by inviting employees who started within the most recent few months because the information being presented will be most relevant to employees who are very new to the portfolio. Also, space is limited. We would like to each group small in order to facilitate interaction among participants.

Please note that, in 2017, Jamie Moffitt began hosting regular opportunities to network with other employees and talk with her, and these sessions are ongoing. With the exception of our department directors, every employee, new and continuing, is invited to participate about once each year. That said, if you were hired after January 1, 2019, and are enthusiastic about participating in an upcoming welcome session, please contact Debbie Sharp at dsharp@uoregon.edu or 541-346-3096.
