The Financial Stewardship Institute (FSI) is an engaging professional development course with eleven unique workshops that involve discussions and learning activities that require analysis and interpretation of key principles related to why we do what we do, and what we do when it comes to stewarding the finances of the University of Oregon.
The following sessions essential elements of financial stewardship: UO Financial Overview, Essentials of University Budget Planning, University Accounting, Payables, Receivables and Collections, Contracting, Fundamentals of Sponsored Projects Administration, Safety and Risk Services, Internal Controls and Fraud Awareness, Financial Reporting and Analysis, Records Management, Human Resources and Payroll.
A unique and essential element of the FSI involves the application of financial stewardship principles taught in the workshops to real issues at the UO. Participants work in small teams to research the issue, identify best practices, and make viable recommendations to the project sponsor, a UO department/unit. Topics from previous projects include:
- Evaluate proximity cards vs. smart cards as the UO ID card;
- Develop a cybersecurity liaison program;
- Analyze recognized university holidays at UO vs. peer institutions;
- Research university-wide strategic purchasing opportunities; and
- Develop a program for managing abandoned bicycles.
The FSI is designed for UO employees who have budget oversight, management, and/or leadership responsibilities. Participants will enhance their skills in strategic thinking, accountability, and proactive risk management in decision-making around budget and finance issues; experience diagnosing and consulting on real life issues facing higher education, and the UO specifically; have opportunities to network with colleagues and subject matter experts around the principles of financial stewardship and their application. A supervisor's nomination is required.
