Eligibility and Application for the UOAdmin Internship Program

Are you interested in learning first-hand about the services that make our campus run?

Are you ready to explore the business and administrative aspects of higher education?

Do you want to earn up to $1,500/term while spending 10 hours/week in a project-based internship experience?

Eligibility

UO students of all educational levels and backgrounds are invited to apply.

To be considered for the UOAdmin Internship Program you must:

  • Be a registered undergraduate or graduate UO student in good academic standing.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
  • Be registered for a minimum of 8 undergraduate or 5 graduate credit hours during each of the three terms of your internship (fall 2023, winter 2024, spring 2024).
  • Be able to meet the criteria listed under "Things to Consider Before Applying".

Things to Consider Before Applying

  • This program requires a commitment to participate in all three academic terms: learn more here.
  • While your weekly schedule can generally be designed around your classes and other work, this program requires you to commit to 10 hours per week for each of the 10 weeks of fall, winter, and spring terms.
  • Attendance at all professional development/networking sessions is mandatory unless you have a documented class schedule conflict.
    • In fall term, there will be 2 hours per week of professional development/networking and 8 hours per week of project-based work.
    • In winter and spring terms, there will be 1 hour of professional development/networking each week, with 9 hours of project work.
    • Prior to each term, we will identify a set weekday and timeframe for these sessions, taking official class schedules into account.
  • We cannot guarantee that you will be engaged in projects that match your exact interests or professional aspirations. As such, we are looking for flexible students with a positive attitude who are interested in experiential learning, understanding more about how a university is run, and who are willing to contribute to different projects underway in the portfolio.
  • This is a competitive internship and if you are offered a place, we need you to honor your commitment. Please review how busy you anticipate being in the 2023-24 academic year before applying and committing to this program.

What should I do if I have trouble accessing or completing the application?

If you have trouble accessing or completing the application or require accommodations as part of the process, please contact dsharp@uoregon.edu prior to the application deadline. We want you to succeed in this process--reach out and help us to support your success.

Why does the application ask for references?

In the application, you will be asked to provide three references. These may be professional or personal references. We may contact references as part of the finalist stage of the selection process. References are useful because they give the UOAdmin Internship Program selection committee an idea of your past experience, your strengths and areas of growth, and your accomplishments. We will notify you prior to contacting your references.

Are applicants subject to background checks?

Applicants that are offered internships may be subject to a standard UO background check prior to the start of their internship. This ensures a safe and secure environment in which university faculty, staff, students, resources, and assets are protected, while protecting the integrity and confidentiality of information gathered during the evaluation. A background check will only be conducted following a contingent offer of internship.

Are there different requirements for graduate and undergraduate participants?

Learning objectives and skill building will be designed each term with your unit supervisor. Project responsibilities and expectations will be aligned with your skill level and experience, which may vary. Graduate and undergraduate students alike will be challenged to grow and learn within the program. Undergraduate students and graduate students will be expected to perform to a high professional level and to explore learning opportunities within Finance and Administration.

May I sign up for only one term of internship?

Unfortunately not. The UOAdmin Program is a highly competitive paid internship that provides broad experiential learning opportunities across the Finance and Administration portfolio. This is only possible by completing the entire three terms with the program. Students must commit to participation for 10 hours per week in each of the three terms: fall, winter and spring. The exact internship schedule is flexible and will be worked out with your supervisor each term, based on your class schedules. The professional development and networking opportunities will be planned around student class schedules each term.

Is 2023-24 program in person or remote?

The 2023-24 UOAdmin Internship is entirely in person for all three terms. Projects and professional development/networking sessions are also being planned as in person for fall, winter, and spring terms. Some supervisors allow for hybrid work schedules, involving some remote work. This is entirely dependent upon the unit and supervisor each term. You should be prepared to complete all projects and professional development in person.

What compensation is available as part of the UOAdmin Program?

Successful VPFA interns that complete their weekly 10-hour internship commitment will receive up to $1,500 per term.

Is it possible to earn academic credit during the UOAdmin Internship Program?

Students interested in earning course credit should discuss the option with their academic program and/or an academic advisor. UO internships have very specific criteria, including enrollment in the appropriate internship course and payment for those credits.

What topics will I learn about in the UOAdmin Internship Program?

This will depend largely on the units in which you are placed, your specific learning and skill-building objectives, and the project needs of the unit during your internship. Past interns share information on the kinds of topics they learned about at the reflections page . The program overview page also has a list of previous projects and descriptions of the VPFA units and their business functions. This should help you understand the areas of potential learning and experience.

Where can I get more information?
